Mayor Gail Parker Carter became the fourteenth Mayor of Glenarden on August 6, 2007. She was re-elected for a second term on May 4, 2009. Mayor Carter is President of the Maryland Black Mayors, Inc., Chapter President of the Maryland Branch of the National Conference of Black Mayors, former Vice Chair of the Board of Directors for the Maryland Black Mayor’s Community Development Corporation, and a member of the Maryland Municipal League, Maryland Mayors Association, National Conference of Black Mayors, Prince George’s County Municipal Association, and the Prince George’s Elected Municipal Women.
As Mayor, her vision is to work diligently at taking a fresh approach to making a difference in the community. Her focus is on providing an efficient administrative workforce, developing programs that benefit seniors and youth, encouraging economic development, and improving business relations with local businesses within the city.
Mayor Carter has been a champion of her neighborhood and an advocate for youth, women, seniors and the homeless. She has also been a strong advocate for many public health issues, including breast cancer and multiple sclerosis. Mayor Carter is also an advocate for programs that improve health through a more nutritional diet and exercise routine.
Mayor Carter is actively involved in her community. She has served as the chairperson for her Neighborhood Watch Program and Committee Chair for Young Life, Prince George’s County. She is currently serving as a mentor for DC-based Mentors, Inc. and a volunteer for Daughters For The Day, Inc.
Mayor Carter is a financial systems analyst for the federal government where she has gained valuable experience and insight on community issues, while merging this knowledge with the benefits of economic and financial services. Mayor Carter is a graduate of the Prince George’s County public school system where she attended Glenarden Woods Elementary, Thomas Johnson Middle School, William Wirt Middle, DuVal High School, and Prince George’s Community College. She earned her undergraduate degree in Business Administration from Bowie State University.
Mayor Carter has been married to Emmanuel for 15 years and mother to daughter, Marjani. An active member of Zion Church in Largo, MD, she is grounded by her faith and continues to serve in several different ministerial capacities, including group leader for her women's small group.
