Youth Achievement Initiative
The Mission
The mission of the Youth Achievement Initiative is to build successful youth within the City of Glenarden by providing them with programs that spring forth hope, encouragement, support and stimuli to educational and career successes.
Program Overview
The City of Glenarden’s Youth Achievement Initiative is a community enrichment program for children ages 12-17 that is geared towards building successful youth. The program consists of four major components that collectively provide scholarships, mentoring, tutoring, life skills and career development assistance to participants.
Youth Broadcast & Scholastic Achievement
The Youth Broadcast & Scholastic Achievement Program is two fold in that it 1) introduces community youth to careers in film & television direction, production, journalism, and broadcasting; and 2) showcases the academic aptitudes of participants through scholastic competitions with award recognition.
The Scholastic Competition & Awards Program provides youth grades 6 to 11, in a friendly but competitive setting, an opportunity to demonstrate the breadth of their knowledge and understanding of various academic subjects. The purpose of the Scholastic Competition & Awards Program is to develop and provide academic competitions, curriculum, and assessments to promote learning and academic excellence through teamwork and competition.
The Broadcast Training Program allows youth grades 6 to 11 the opportunity to participate in a one month broadcast program at the Glenarden Television Studio. The program places emphasis on: news anchor reporting, script writing, basic use of video cameras, production planning, audio techniques, post production editing, functions of director, executive director and producer, lighting and interview techniques.
Crime Control & Prevention
The Crime Control and Prevention Program introduces area youth to careers in law enforcement through participation in the Junior Cadet Program. The Junior Police Cadet Program is a volunteer program for both males and females in 7th to 12th grade that is designed to foster positive relationships between youth and police through mentoring/training. Cadets receive basic hand-on experience and training in a variety of police duties including: patrol procedures, report writing, police radio procedures, crime prevention, traffic enforcement, basic first aid and other areas.
Youth Community Improvement
The Youth Community Improvement Program partners participants with community volunteers and organizations that specialize in youth development. The premise of the program is to close the divide between community youth and adults by fostering positive relationships through:
- Mentoring: participants are partnered with local adult volunteers in an effort to provide them with supportive mentoring relationships that promote their personal, academic and career development.
- Tutoring: participants are provided with tutoring services in all core curriculum subject matter in an effort to increase local graduation rates and academic test scores.
- Counseling: youth participate in various sponsored workshops designed to tackle current issues (peer pressure, pregnancy, academic challenges, abuse, drugs, etc.).
- Job Training: provides youth with job training workshops that focus on interviewing skills, resume writing techniques, developing career plans, and customer service skills.

The Youth Scholarship Program is designed to award yearly scholarships to high school graduating seniors within the City of Glenarden for use at both in and out of state colleges/universities.
